H1N1 Flu

This page provides general information about the 2009 H1N1 flu (formerly swine flu) and flu prevention for veterans and VA staff. VA has a great deal of information available for general audiences on key public health measures, such as hand washing, respiratory hygiene, and other steps to prevent the flu, as well as to care for those who develop the disease. This information is in English and Spanish and videos are posted as well. Veterans and VA can fight the flu.

  • 2009 Flu Vaccination and VA: This year, VA hopes to give more than 3 million Veterans and VA staff seasonal flu vaccine and is preparing to give H1N1 flu vaccine to a similar number of Veterans and VA staff, if it is approved for use. At the request of the White House, VA is also preparing to help vaccinate some other Federal employees as well.

What can I do to help prevent infection?

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick and limit contact with others.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Stay informed.

Who can I contact in VA about H1N1 flu?

Veterans who have health concerns can contact their nearest VA medical facility or call toll free at 1-800-827-1000.


How can I volunteer to help in the event of a pandemic flu emergency?

VA and other departments and agencies offer opportunities for VA staff and others to help in disasters. Learn more about how to assist in an emergency.
