Trade Policy & Agreements

The Trade Compliance Center, the TCC, in the U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration, is the U.S. Government's focal point for monitoring foreign compliance with trade agreements to see that U.S. firms and workers get the maximum benefits from these agreements.

The TCC's Trade and Related Agreements Database (TARA) includes active, binding agreements between the United States and its trading partners covering manufactured products and services (see Site Map for disclaimers). It is designed to provide the public with information on agreements currently in force and does not include agriculture agreements. For information on agricultural trade issues, please contact the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

One specific trade agreement with India is the Indian Motion Pictures Agreement, eliminating a number of restrictions on the importation and distribution of motion pictures, prints and video cassettes and giving U.S. and other foreign exporters greater access to the Indian film market.

The following initiatives offer a framework through which to enhance the trade relationship between the United States and India:

The United States-India Trade Policy Forum (TPF) is an institutional arrangement between the two governments to discuss trade and investment issues. The TPF is a key element of the U.S.-India Economic Dialogue, which was launched during the visit of Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to Washington in July 2005.

The U.S.-India High Technology Cooperation Group (HTCG) provides a forum for discussing U.S.-India high-technology trade issues and building the confidence to facilitate trade in sensitive items. The HTCG was formed in 2002 and promotes bilateral high-tech trade, leading to positive developments in the U.S.-India trade relationship.

The U.S.-India Strategic Partnership is rooted in shared values and is broad in nature and scope, with our two countries working together on global issues, including expanding economic freedom and democracy; ensuring plentiful sources of clean, safe, and reliable energy; protecting security; supporting innovation and technological advances; and promoting public health.
