Lakeshore hazard messages will contain Rip Current
Outlooks. Rip Current Outlooks use the following, three-tiered set of
qualifiers:
-
Low Risk of rip currents. Wind and/or wave
conditions are not expected to support the development of rip currents;
however, rip currents can sometimes occur, especially in the vicinity of groins, jetties, and piers. Know how to
swim and heed the advice of lifeguards.
-
Moderate Risk of rip currents. Wind
and/or wave conditions support stronger or more frequent rip currents. Only
experienced surf swimmers should enter the water.
-
High Risk
of rip currents. Wind and/or wave conditions support dangerous rip currents.
Rip currents are life-threatening to anyone entering the surf.

When you arrive at the beach, speak
with on-duty lifeguards about rip currents and all other water conditions
expected for the day.

Rip Current Safety
...HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY AFTERNOON...
OVERVIEW...
FOR THE MARQUETTE AND ALGER COUNTY SHORELINES...
NORTHERLY WINDS UP TO 30 MPH WILL PERSIST ACROSS CENTRAL AND
EASTERN LAKE SUPERIOR TODAY BEFORE DIMINISHING TO 15 MPH BY
SUNDAY EVENING. THESE STRONG WINDS WILL BUILD WAVES UP TO 8 FEET
BY THIS AFTERNOON AND LEAD TO A HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENT ALONG
MARQUETTE AND ALGER COUNTY BEACHES. PLAN ON THE HIGHER WAVES AND
INCREASED RISK OF RIP CURRENTS TO DIMINISH LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
DUE TO THE HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY
AFTERNOON...SWIMMING IN LAKE SUPERIOR IS STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. A
HIGH RISK OF RIP CURRENTS MEANS THAT WIND AND/OR WAVE CONDITIONS
SUPPORT DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS AND ARE LIFE-THREATENING TO ANYONE
ENTERING THE SURF.
SINCE A NORTH WIND IS EXPECTED...A DANGEROUS LONG SHORE CURRENT
IS EXPECTED NEAR PICNIC ROCKS IN THE CITY OF MARQUETTE. ANY
PERSONS THAT GET CAUGHT IN THIS CURRENT SHOULD IMMEDIATELY SWIM
TOWARD THE MAIN SHORELINE.
