  1. Question

Why is human exploration of Mars unlikely, at least in the short term?

Sending humans to Mars and returning them to Earth is technically challenging and will be expensive. We will need a new generation of large rockets and a new spacecraft design with a modern life-support system that will fully recycle air and water. New systems will also be needed to land on Mars and to launch from Mars for the return fight to Earth. In spite of the challenges, Mars is the one other planet in our solar system where humans could establish a permanent base, and scientific questions such as the search for microbial life on Mars may ultimately require the presence of humans. For a discussion of the NASA plans to send humans to Mars within the next 25 years, see the NASA website .
