Smart Power
“We must use what has been called “smart power”: the full range of tools at our disposal -- diplomatic, economic, military, political, legal, and cultural -- picking the right tool, or combination of tools, for each situation. With smart power, diplomacy will be the vanguard of foreign policy. This is not a radical idea. U.S.- Colombia Defense Cooperation Agreement
Secretary Clinton (Aug. 18):
"The foreign minister and I...discussed the bilateral defense cooperation agreement that our governments hope to sign in the near future. This agreement ensures that appropriate protections are in place for our service members. It will allow us to continue working together to meet the challenges posed by narco-traffickers, terrorists, and other illegal armed groups in Colombia. Upcoming Afghanistan Elections
Secretary Clinton (Aug. 17):
"In three days’ time, the Afghan people will go to the polls to elect a President and new Provincial Councils. This election day will not be without its challenges, but the Afghan people have seen unparalleled campaigning, debate and dialogue in their country. ... Iraq Bombings
Secretary Clinton (Aug. 17):
"The United States joins leaders of all communities in Iraq in condemning the bombings that have taken place over the past several weeks in various places across Iraq.
