USAID Lebanon: From the American People

PROGRAMS: Rebuilding Lebanon

The United States announced a $230 million commitment to Lebanon for humanitarian, reconstruction and security assistance on August 21, 2006.

Bridge
USAID has begun reconstructing the Mudeirej Bridge in the Sofar-Mudeirej region of Lebanon. It is over 225 feet high and almost 1,600 feet long. The two-span Mudeirej Bridge is the largest bridge in Lebanon and among the tallest in the Middle East.

Rebuilding the bridge will restore one of Lebanon's most important commercial links between Beirut and Chtoura, toward Lebanon's eastern border. It will stimulate trade and economic growth essential for Lebanon's financial recovery. Contrack International, a U.S.-based company with Lebanese and American management, won the $30 million project. Contrack International uses three Lebanese firms to do the work. They will employ approximately 150 Lebanese for the design and construction.

Bringing hope to those in need
Following the 2006 summer conflict, the U.S. government has reached more than two million people across Lebanon with emergency and humanitarian assistance. This included clearing unexploded ordinance and providing basic supplies such as blankets, medicine, heating fuel and seeds to restart farming. It also included emergency food supplies and funding to rejuvenate small businesses.
