LTG Frank Helmick, Commander of MNSTC-I Briefs Pentagon Press via Satellite from Iraq - Lt. Gen. Frank Helmick, Commander of Multi-National Security Transition Command – Iraq briefed the Pentagon press corps today via satellite from Iraq. During the briefing, Lt. Gen. Helmick took questions about Wednesday's attacks and ongoing security operations in Iraq. The first audio clip in the link above is Lt. Gen. Helmick's comments on the recent truck bombings. He calls them "the worst in two years". This cut is 13 seconds. The second audio clip is Lt. Gen. Helmick's description of the Iraqis' developing security capabilities. This clip is 17 seconds. The third and final audio clip is Lt. Gen. Helmick's projection about the planned exit date for U.S. forces from Iraq. This clip is 14 seconds.

Australian Brig. Gen. Damian Cantwell, ISAF Election Task Force Chief Briefs Press Corps - With Afghanistan set to hold national elections Thursday, The Australian general heading NATO's election task force says that while the Taliban is likely to prevent some Afghans from going to the polls, as many as 90 percent of registered voters will, he believes, be able to cast ballots. In the three audio cuts here, Cantwell calls the election a symbolic rejection of the Taliban, estimates that millions of Afghans will turn out, but also acknowledges Taliban intimidation will prevent some Afghans from voting. Secretary of Defense Gates and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Cartwright - Today Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. James Cartwright briefed the Pentagon Press Corps in the Pentagon briefing room. Secretary Gates provided an opening statement on Afghanistan operations and then he and Gen. Cartwright took questions from the press. The first clip in the audio file above contains Sec. Gates’ response on how long the U.S. might be engaged in an active war in Afghanistan. He explained that we do not yet know many of the variables involved in making that decision. This clip is 14 seconds. The second clip is Sec. Gates discussing how long it will take to ultimately defeat the Taliban and al Qaida. He allows that this may take a very long time- to include time to continue to rebuild Afghan infrastructure. This clip is 24 seconds. The third clip Sec. Gates’ comments on the upcoming Afghan election and his expectation for a strong turnout. This clip is 27 seconds.

Pentagon Press Briefing by Major General Caslen from Tikrit, Iraq - Major General Robert Caslen, Multi-National Division North commander, provided an update today to the Pentagon Press Corps on on-going security operations in Iraq via satellite from Tikrit. The first clip in the audio file above is MG Caslen discussing the drop in insurgent attacks in Iraq since coalition forces pulled out of Iraqi towns and cities in June, 2009. He mentions that high profile attacks have risen in that time, particularly in Mosul, but that the level of violence overall is falling. This clip is 23 seconds. The second clip is MG Caslen addressing the ongoing differences between the Arabs and Kurds in the area. He believes these differences must ultimately be resolved at the political level. MG Caslen also mentions the possibility of deterioration in relations between these groups after coalition forces withdraw entirely. This clip is 7 seconds.

Mr. Geoff Morrell, Pentagon Press Secretary, Took Questions from Pentagon Press - The audio clip linked above includes Mr. Morrell's response to questions on the six individuals detained by authorities in Kuwait who were allegedly planning an attack on U.S. forces in that area. He commented that many details of the foiled plot are unknown. The clip is 19 seconds. During the briefing, Mr. Morrell also took questions on the upcoming election in Afghanistan, the al-Qaida leader who is presumed to be dead, and other issues.

Major General Scaparotti Briefs the Pentagon Press on Afghanistan Operations - Major General Curtis M. Scaparotti, Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force 82- Afghanistan, briefed the Pentagon Press Corps today via satellite from Eastern Afghanistan. The first clip in the audio file above is MG Scaparotti discussing the new level of sophistication in improvised explosive devices (IEDs) being used by the enemy in Afghanistan. He adds that these IEDs account for the majority of military deaths in Afghanistan (11 seconds). The second clip is MG Scaparotti drawing a parallel between the bombing strategies employed by insurgents in Iraq and the bombing strategies now employed by the enemy in Afghanistan. He notes that this new bombing strategy is currently their biggest challenge (8 seconds).

Adm. Keating Briefs the Press on North Korea and U.S. Preparedness for Contingencies - Admiral Timothy Keating, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, says it's unclear whether a departure of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il would pose a security threat to the US or the region, but that the United States has developed plans to deal with any contingency. He spoke to reporters at the Pentagon Wednesday.

Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Brief Pentagon Press Corps - Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen briefed the Pentagon press corps today at 2 p.m. EST. Secretary Gates announced that he is ordering a temporary increase of 22,000 active duty members for the United States Army to support current operations. He discussed the progress made to date and some of the challenges that U.S. Forces in the region continue to face.
