INTRODUCTION

US Public Health Service (PHS) Pharmacists have practiced for many years in a variety of expanded clinical roles to provide expert care and public health to the populations we serve. With the strength and interest in the PHS Commissioned Corps on the rise and the expansion of roles by our Pharmacists, a Clinical Sub-Committee was formed to further facilitate and support these roles and interests. It is important to promote these roles by disseminating interagency information, recognizing best practices, and communicating the value of our style and brand of clinical pharmacy to all PHS officers. This initiative may also serve as a recruitment and retention resource to illuminate our quality of practice in the PHS.

OBJECTIVES

Objectives of the Clinical Sub-Committee include (but are not limited to):

  • Represent the large contingent of clinical pharmacists in the USPHS
  • Advocate for the expanded roles of USPHS pharmacists within its agencies
  • Assist clinical and non-clinical pharmacists expand their roles and interests by disseminating information across agencies
  • Serve as a larger lobbying body for expanded roles outside the federal sector
  • Assess and discuss the status of clinical pharmacy across the USPHS
  • Highlight best practices and model programs through multiple mediums (webpage, publications, etc)
  • Develop new initiatives to support pharmacists practicing in clinical roles
  • Assist non-clinical pharmacists to obtain clinical hours and /or clinical credentials
  • Seek reimbursement for clinical (cognitive) services where appropriate
  • Obtain support of academia for competency-based recognition within PHS
  • Aid recruitment and retention efforts by raising awareness of clinical opportunities within the USPHS
  • Expand innovative clinical programs into other agencies (i.e. IHS NCPS)
  • Promote recognition and raise awareness of pharmacists as providers of primary care
