The Department of Homeland Security participates in a number of events throughout the year. The Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO) participate in events to reach out to the public and disseminate knowledge regarding new technologies that help homeland security officials better do their jobs to protect the homeland. The following events include participation from the Department Directorate for Science and Technology.

August 2009

Enforcement Expo-Phoenix

Dates: August 4-5, 2009

Location: Phoenix, Ariz.

Event Overview:  This is a closed show limited only to active members of the law enforcement community. Aimed at the large South-West United States audience, the event features law enforcement’s latest equipment, products, tools and services, provides a series of free certified seminars, and offers attendees free hands-on training. Pacific Operational Science and Technology

Dates: August 3-6, 2009

Location: Honolulu, Hawaii

Event Overview:  Pacific Operational Science & Technology Conference serves as the annual forum for discussion of regional military challenges and Science and Technology solutions to those challenges. This year’s event will focus on “Synchronizing Operators and Technologists” and will feature senior leaders as well as operational and S&T participants focusing on identifying, tracking and integrating S&T efforts to USPACOM’s operational gaps to initiate follow-on operational-technology solution activities. American Chemical Society (ACS)

Dates: August 16-20, 2009

Location: Washington, D.C.

Event Overview: The overarching theme for the 2009 American Chemical Society national meeting in Washington, D.C. is “Chemistry and Global Security: Challenges and Opportunities.” The location and timing of the 2009 ACS meeting in Washington, D.C. presents a unique opportunity to address questions related to chemistry and global security. The location will facilitate access to the funding agencies that can present the global security challenges and opportunities to be addressed over the next decade or so, as well as to a new administration that will be looking for ideas and a dialogue with the scientific community to set an agenda for the next four years or more. CSD, ACSD, Marine Hybrid Container, and MATTS (mLOCK)

Dates: August 17-18, 2009

Location: Sandia National Laboratory, Albuquerque, N.M.

Event Overview: A one- to two-day technology expo, where there will be controlled demonstrations and various Concepts of Operations applications to the various Department components that the Science and Technology Directorate has ITAs with. 

Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO)

Dates: August 16-20, 2009

Location: Las Vegas, Nev.

Event Overview: APCO International is the world’s largest organization dedicated to public safety communications. More than 15,000 members rely on APCO for their professional needs – from examining standards and issues to providing education, products and services. UXO/Countermine/Range Forum

Dates: August 24-27, 2009

Location: Orlando, Fla.

Event Overview: Hosted by the Department of Defense Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Center of Excellence – with support from other Federal organizations – the UXO/Countermine/Range Forum is the DoD’s Preeminent Conference on Technology, Programs and Partnerships®.

Assembling the best researchers, developers, policy-makers and program planners from industry, military, government and private sector agencies worldwide to showcase cutting-edge technology, ideas, programs and partnerships, The Forum will address 21st Explosive Hazard Challenges: Technology Solutions and Partnerships for Full Spectrum Operations Century. International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Fire Rescue International

Dates: August 25-29, 2009

Location: Dallas, Texas

Event Overview: Presented by the IAFC, Fire Rescue International brings together more than 13,000 of the most prominent fire and emergency service leaders representing all types and sizes of departments from across North America and more than forty countries around the globe. The IAFC represents the leadership of more than 1.2 million firefighters and emergency responders. IAFC members are the world’s leading experts in firefighting, emergency medical services. Enforcement Expo-Columbus

AIAA Homeland Security Conference and Showcase

Dates: September 2-4, 2009

Location: Monterey, Calif.

Event Overview: The purpose of the conference is to provide in-depth content and practical insights to the Mission Integration theme. This conference is a premier forum that allows government and industry to develop synergistic relationships to protect the United States from both terrorists and disasters while securing its borders. New York Law Enforcement Expo

Dates: September 9-10, 2009

Location: New York, NY

Event Overview: A two-day event in the heart of Manhattan which features many of the nation’s most recognized law enforcement industry companies, world renowned keynote speakers, and other law enforcement professionals to help provide insight and education for this critical constituency. International County/City Managers Association (ICMA)

Dates: September 13-16, 2009

Location: Montreal, Canada

Event Overview: ICMA is the professional and educational organization for chief appointed managers, administrators, and assistants in cities, towns, counties, and regional entities throughout the world. ICMA provides technical and management assistance, training, and information resources to its members and the local government community. This year’s program will address the issues, trends, and challenges that county and city managers are facing right now, through experts from the public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors. National Association of EMS Officials (NASEMSO)

Dates: September 20-25, 2009

Location: Little Rock, Ark.

Event Overview: NASEMSO is an event where members attend including federal officials with a role in emergency medical services and EMS suppliers. The NASEMSO annual meeting addresses current issues and trends in emergency medical services systems. Programs are conducted in a variety of formats to maximize information exchange and dialogue with state EMS officials on current EMS issues. Biometric Consortium Conference

Dates: September 22-24, 2009

Location: Tampa, Fla.

Event Overview: Supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the National Security Agency (NSA), the Biometrics Consortium Conference is focused on Biometric Technologies for Defense, Homeland Security, Identity Management, Border Crossing and Electronic Commerce.

The Conference will include presentations, seminars and panel discussions with the participation of internationally recognized experts in biometric technologies, system and application developers, IT business strategists, and government and commercial officers. Euro-Atlantic Stakeholders Conference

Dates: September 30-October 2, 2009

Location: Stockholm, Sweden

Event Overview: The Swedish governmental agency “Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency” (MSB) in cooperation with the US Department of Homeland Security Science & Technology Directorate are organizing this event to advance societies´ preparedness and resiliency against a broad spectrum of threats by effectively communicating research needs, capabilities, innovative technology and conceptual frames among stakeholders. International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)

Dates: October 3-7, 2009

Location: Denver, Colo.

Event Overview: The International Association of Chiefs of Police has long had a reputation for providing top-notch education on the most pressing law enforcement topics. More than 15,000 law enforcement professionals are expected to attend the 116th Annual IACP Conference and Exposition in Denver. The event features renowned keynote speakers, forums and technical workshops, and the largest exhibit hall of products and services for the law enforcement communit. National Congress of American Indian

Dates: October 11-16, 2009

Location: Palm Springs, Calif.

Event Overview: NCAI currently includes 250 member tribes from throughout the United States. It now serves as the major national tribal government organization, and is positioned to monitor federal policy and coordinated efforts to inform federal decisions that affect tribal government interests.NCAI serves to secure the rights and benefits to which Native Americans are entitled; to enlighten the public toward the better understanding of the Indian people; to preserve rights under Indian treaties or agreements with the United States; and to promote the common welfare of the American Indians and Alaska Natives. Explosives Detection 2009 Workshop and Symposium

Dates: October 20-23, 2009

Location: San Diego, Calif.

Event Overview: This international symposium and workshop provides a venue for U.S. and allied governments, academia, and industry to share information, develop partnerships, advance technology, provide first responder training, and demonstrate capabilities in the area of explosives detection. Participants include first responders, government sponsors, and policy and standards setting organizations from the federal, state, local, and military agencies. Applications to exhibit are now being accepted. Exhibitor set-up is October 19th, 2009. We are also soliciting submissions for posters that highlight current projects in the area of explosives detection. If you are interested in displaying a poster, please submit an abstract to: detection_conference09@bah.com. Conference attendance is expected to exceed 500 people. EMS Expo

American Indian Science and Engineering Society

Dates: October 29-31, 2009

Location: Portland, Ore.

Event Overview: Through a variety of educational programs and its annual conference, AISES offers financial, academic and cultural support to American Indians and Alaska Natives from middle school through graduate school. AISES provides professional development activities to enable teachers to work effectively with Native students. AISES also develops culturally appropriate curricula and publications. AISES builds partnerships with tribes, schools, other non-profit organizations, corporations, foundations and government agencies to realize its goals. AISES especially helps American Indian and Alaska Native students prepare for careers in science, technology, and engineering. International Association of Emergency Managers and EMEX

Dates: October 31-November 5, 2009

Location: Orlando, Fla.

Event Overview: The IAEM Annual Conference provides a forum for current trends and topics, information about the latest tools and technology in emergency management and homeland security, and advances IAEM committee work. Sessions encourage stakeholders at all levels of government, the private sector, public health and related professions to exchange ideas on collaborating to protect lives and property from disaster. Target attendees include emergency managers, homeland security officials, first response coordinators, private industry risk managers or contingency planners.
