Linet Inducted to Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars

Dr. Martha LinetDr. Martha Linet, Chief of the Radiation Epidemiology Branch, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, has been inducted into the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars in recognition of her seminal scientific contributions and leadership in the epidemiology of leukemia and radiation effects. The Society of Scholars consists of former postdoctoral fellows, postdoctoral degree recipients, house staff and junior or visiting faculty who have served at least a year at Johns Hopkins University, and have thereafter gained marked distinction in the fields of physical, biological, medical, social, or engineering sciences or in the humanities and for whom at least five years has elapsed since their last Hopkins affiliation.

Fraumeni Receives AACR Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research

Dr. Joseph FraumeniDr. Joseph Fraumeni Jr., Director, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, has been selected to receive the 6th Annual American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research for his seminal research contributions in understanding the causes and prevention of human cancer. Among his many accomplishments are the discovery of a familial cancer syndrome that bears his name along with his colleague Dr. Frederick P. Li, and the development of the U.S. Cancer Mortality Atlas project that identified high-risk areas where Dr. Fraumeni and his colleagues conducted epidemiologic studies to uncover several environmental hazards that inspired cancer control measures. For over 30 years, Dr. Fraumeni has been the architect of NCI's intramural research program in epidemiology and related areas, while developing fellowship programs designed to train and mentor the next generation of interdisciplinary scientists.

Gail receives the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO)

Mitchell GailDr. Mitchell Gail, Senior Investigator with the Biostatistics Branch, has been selected to receive the 2009 Distinguished Achievement Award from the American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO). The award will be presented at the Annual Meeting in Tampa on March 8-9. ASPO established this award in 1983 to recognize individuals whose research has greatly advanced the society’s mission of cancer prevention and control


Koutros Receives American College of Epidemiology (ACE) Student Prize

Stella KoutrosDr. Stella Koutros, fellow in the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch (OEEB) received the 2008 Student Prize at this year’s annual meeting of the American College of Epidemiology (ACE), held on September 14-16, 2008 in Tucson, Arizona. She was selected for her work on "Aromatic amine pesticide use and human cancer risk: results from the U.S. Agricultural Health Study". With mentoring from Michael Alavanja (OEEB) and Dr. Tongzheng Zhang, of Yale University, this paper was part of her thesis research for her doctoral degree from Yale University. The Student Prize included travel funds to the ACE annual meeting, where she gave a plenary presentation and received a certificate for her winning paper. Pitt Receives ISBER Special Service Award

Dr. Karen E. PittDr. Karen E. Pitt, Special Assistant for Biological Resources, received the 2008 ISBER Special Service Award for her outstanding contribution in leading the development of, and editing, the 2nd Edition of “Best Practices for Repositories: Collection, Storage, Retrieval and Distribution of Biological Materials for Research” for which she served as Editor-in-Chief. This newly created award is designed to recognize individuals who have made exceptional contributions towards the goals of the Society through the performance of a special service or act on behalf of the organization. ISBER is an acronym for the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories. Zahm Receives Harvard School of Public Health Alumni Award of Merit

Shelia Hoar ZahmDr. Sheila Hoar Zahm, Deputy Director, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, received the Harvard School of Public Health Alumni Award of Merit for her research on occupational and environmental cancer as well as her outstanding scientific leadership and community service. The award was presented at the Alumni Award of Merit dinner in Boston on June 6, 2008. The Alumni Award of Merit is the highest honor presented to an alumnus/ae of the Harvard School of Public Health. This annual award recognizes alumni/ae whose leadership, community service, contributions, and commitment to the field of public health exemplify the ideals set forth by the Harvard School of Public Health.

Hoover Receives AACR-ACS Award

Robert N. HooverDr. Robert N. Hoover, Director of the DCEG Epidemiology and Biostatistics Program, received the 17th Annual AACR-American Cancer Society Award for Research Excellence in Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention. Dr. Hoover delivered the award lecture on April 15, 2008, at the AACR Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. The AACR and the American Cancer Society established this award in 1992 to honor outstanding research accomplishments in the fields of cancer epidemiology, biomarkers, and prevention.



Mai's team receives inaugural JMCR Award for Best Case Report

Phuong Mai A team of CGB investigators led by Dr. Phuong Mai received the inaugural JMCR Award for Best Case Report (2007) on March 19th, 2008 for its publication entitled "A possible new syndrome with growth-hormone secreting pituitary adenoma, colonic polyposis, lipomatosis, lentigines and renal carcinoma in association with familial testicular germ cell malignancy: A case report". This prestigious award was given at BioMed Central's Research Awards ceremony at the Royal Society of Medicine, in London, England. Over the past year the article has been one of the most highly-accessed from this new journal.
