Facilities

Photograph of researchers in a laboratory. The Center is housed in the Boettcher Center West Building, located at 2190 East Iliff Avenue on the University of Denver campus. It includes a multi-user laboratory and a computing/conference area.

The laboratory is fully equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation for genetic analyses on nucleic acids. The laboratory also has areas for general DNA extraction, a separate room for ancient DNA extraction, and spacious bench areas for visiting scientists.

Arrangements can be made to access a real-time PCR machine, a Transgenomics WAVE apparatus (denaturing high performance liquid chromatography), and a second automatic sequencer via the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Denver.

The computer/conference area consists of a computer room and a meeting area.

Services

Photograph of a lab worker pipetting into a well plate.General

At the Rocky Mountain Center for Conservation Genetics and Systematics, we routinely perform DNA extraction, sequencing, and fragment analysis and have used such techniques to generate information used by biologists to help manage species of concern. We welcome collaborators that need the aforementioned services.

Microsatellite Isolation

Using our highly efficient rapid-capture technique, we have been successful in isolating microsatellites from numerous species (birds, mammals, reptiles, and invertebrates) that have effectively been used in population studies. We now offer the service of microsatellite isolation for any interested parties.

Capabilities

To address genetics questions at different scales, the Center uses DNA sequencing of nuclear, mitochondrial, and chloroplast DNA and fragment analysis. We investigate the relationship among species, populations, families, and individuals. For detailed examples of research projects ongoing in the Center, see the Research page.
