Forest Service Metadata Users Guide

The steps to get from the REAL WORLD to a GIS product are detailed and many. With each step, information must be gathered in the form of METADATA or information about data. Metadata describes the overall history of our data, including content, quality, condition, and other characteristics. Why do we need to gather Metadata? What form will it reside in?
