Warden Message

August 14, 2009

This Warden Message alerts U.S. citizens resident in Cameroon to the latest information regarding human cases of 2009-H1N1 Influenza, sometimes referred to as swine flu or novel H1N1.  The Cameroonian Ministry of Public Health has reported that four cases of 2009-H1N1 have been confirmed in Cameroon.  The four are currently under treatment, and the outcome of the treatment looks positive.

Any questions or concerns about influenza or other illnesses should be directed to a medical professional.  Although the Embassy cannot provide medical advice or provide medical services to the public, the American Citizen Services section of the Embassy can provide a list of hospitals and doctors.

For more information on U.S. Government policy during a pandemic, and for travel safety information, please see the State Department’s “Pandemic/Avian Influenza” and “Remain in Country” fact sheets on travel.state.gov.  Further information about 2009-H1N1 Influenza, including steps you can take to stay healthy, can be found at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control website at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/, the U.S. Government’s federal influenza website at http://www.flu.gov/, and the World Health Organization website at http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html.

U.S. citizens may also call the Office of Overseas Citizens Services in the United States for the latest travel information.  The Office of Overseas Citizens Services can be reached from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, Monday through Friday, by calling 1-888-407-4747 from within the U.S. and Canada, or by calling 1-202-501-4444 from other countries.

The Embassy urges all American citizens in Cameroon to register with the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon through the State Department’s travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov, or to register directly with the Embassy by e-mailing YaoundeACS@state.gov, or by telephoning the Embassy at 237-2220-1500 x4033.  By registering with the Embassy, American citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in case of an emergency.  Registering will also help the Embassy to put you in touch with your local American citizen warden, who can help keep you informed of developments.

The U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé is located on Avenue Rosa Parks in the Mbankolo Quartier, adjacent to the Mount Febe Golf Club; mailing address P.O. Box 817; embassy tel. (237) 2220-1500, fax: (237) 2220-1572.  The Embassy Branch Office in Douala is located on the corner of Rue Ivy and Rue French in the Ecobank Building in Bonanjo, tel.: (237) 3342-5331, fax: (237) 3342-7790.

For after-hours emergencies, U.S. citizens should call 237-2220-1500 and ask to speak with the duty officer.
