While I believe that the federal government has a very clear role in ensuring the safety of medical products and pharmaceuticals, tax policies have often distorted the free market for healthcare products, creating shortages and cost increases.

The federal government’s unequal tax treatment between corporate employees and private individuals has caused the dominance of third-party payers for health care. This helps create excessive health care costs. Free market incentives and consumer choice are the solution to the rising costs of medical care and prescription drugs. A single payer system would result in shortages, rationing, and bloated government spending.

H.R. 4460, the Health Care Choice Act of 2007

If passed, this act would allow individuals to have a wider variety of health insurance policy choices by allowing policies qualified for sale in one state to be sold in other states effectively allowing competition and promoting free market principles.  This will be particularly beneficial for those who purchase their own health insurance, i.e. self-employed individuals.
