Russian Abstract Journals in Science and Technology

     In 1952 the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences made a decision to set up the Scientific Information Institute in the framework of the Academy of Sciences. The main task of the Institute was to organize the informational support of basic science by centralizing the analysis, searching, and processing of information. The Government reorganized the Institute into the All-Russian Institute of Scientific and Technical Information (VINITI) in 1955. VINITI began to cover not only basic science, but also applied science. According to a brochure published in 2002, VINITI today is (1) a team of highly skilled professionals processing more than one million scientific publications annually, (2) the largest on-line data bank in Russia, which contains more than 25 million documents, (3) the Referativnyi Zhurnal (The Abstract Journal), which is distributed, subscribed to, and read by scientists in sixty countries, (4) more than 330 titles of publications, which cover all fields of basic and applied sciences, (5) more than 240 databases on science and technology, economics, and medicine, (6) powerful retrieval systems, and (7) a wide range of services.      Referativnyi Zhurnal (Abstract Journal) contains abstracts, summaries, and bibliographic descriptions of publications in all fields of natural, applied and technical sciences, economics, and medicine. Referativinyi Zhurnal consists of twenty-seven cumulative volumes covering 212 issues, as well as 38 separate issues. These cover about one million scientific publications. Since 1995 Referativnyi Zhurnal has been issued both in printed and electronic versions. Referativnyi Zhurnal is useful not only for abstracts and indexes of Russian materials, but also for materials from all over the world. A good portion of the materials that are abstracted and indexed are foreign materials and the entries for such materials are often in the original language of publication.

      Referativnyi zhurnal is checked in at the Library of Congress by the Acquisitions Division and then sent to the European Reading Room. Requests for unbound issues must be made from the European Reading Room. The most currently received unbound issues are stored on Deck 13 of the Jefferson Building until they are sent for binding. After binding the volumes are housed in the general collections by classification number. The European Reading Room keeps current issues from anywhere from several months to several years, often depending on the size of the issues. For example, as of October 2003 the European Reading Room has some issues as far back as 1989. As of October 2003 the only issues from the year 2003 are for the titles “Elektrotekhnika,” “Fizika,” and “Geografiia.” The older issues that are unbound are most likely to be very thin issues that are collected in one volume every several years, whereas thicker issues such as “Fizika” are bound and sent to the general collections more often. As of January 2004 the most recent bound volume under call number QC1.A419633 of “Fizika” is December 2001. Some titles have holdings in microform and are kept in the Microform Reading Room in the Jefferson Building (LJ139B). The list of titles in this reference guide was compiled in December 2002 by browsing the title “Referativyni zhurnal” in the Library of Congress online catalog and then combing through the resulting more than 200 bibliographical records. This list reflects holdings information found by visiting the decks of the general collections for bound volumes and of the European Reading Room for unbound issues. If a year is listed do not assume that the holdings for every year are complete. The issn is for most recent version. If the bibliographic record for a particular title is not found in the online catalog, consult reference staff in the European Reading Room
