In February of 2007, the FBI announced the Civil Rights-Era Cold Case Initiative, a joint effort with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners, as well as community leaders and civic organizations, to identify and reexamine unsolved hate crimes from the civil rights era. Through this initiative, the FBI is conducting more than 100 investigations into unsolved civil rights murders that occurred prior to 1969. A partial list of these cold cases has now been posted on our website.
As the years have passed, trails have run cold, memories have faded, and justice has been denied. The FBI has devoted hundreds of hours to these investigations, but now we need the public's assistance. Your memories may be our last, best chance to bring a measure of justice to the victims and their families. We cannot turn back the clock and right these wrongs, but together, we can bring truth to light.
CONTACT: If you have any information on any of the cases listed, please contact your local FBI office, or, if outside the United States, the nearest United States Embassy or Consulate.
