ABSTRACTS FOR FY 2006 AWARDS High School Equivalency Program (HEP)

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Tifton, GA, S141A060029

The Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College HEP proposes to serve 80 eligible students annually by providing a variety of academic services and educational assistance leading to the GED. The project will allow for three 10-week (residential) and two 15-week (commuter) sessions per year. The primary performance target is that 80 percent of program participants will obtain a GED.

Central Washington University, Yakima, WA, S141A060005

The HEP at Central Washington University proposes to serve 125 eligible participants in central Washington State annually as a commuter program offering a comprehensive array of academic, vocational and support services leading to GED completion. The project anticipates 70 percent of eligible participants will complete all course requirements and receive a GED.

El Paso Community College, El Paso, TX, S141A060020

The El Paso Community College HEP proposes to provide community-based academic and support services to 170 eligible commuter students annually to enable them to successfully obtain a GED and subsequently gain employment or be placed in an institution of higher education or other postsecondary training. The target outcomes of the El Paso Community College HEP are to have 70 percent of eligible participants attain a GED annually and 60 percent of HEP graduates be placed in either postsecondary education, military service, or career positions.

Fort Scott Community College, Fort Scott, KS, S141A060003

The Fort Scott Community College HEP is a collaborative effort among the State migrant education programs in Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma as well as agribusiness partners and state parent advisory councils in the tri-State area. The program offers year-round service in a combined residential-commuter format on the Fort Scott campus as well as at seven satellite sites across the tri-State area. The project serves 90 students annually and anticipates 80 percent of HEP participants will complete their course of study and 64 percent will receive a GED. Hartnell Community College District, Salinas, CA, S141A060007

The Hartnell Community College HEP proposes to provide necessary academic and support services to an average of 100 eligible commuter students annually to enable them to successfully complete the program by attaining their GED and successfully gain employment or be placed in an institution of higher education or other postsecondary training. The expected outcomes of the Hartnell Community College HEP are to ensure that at least 80 percent of eligible participants will (1) complete the course of study and receive a GED and (2) enter postsecondary education programs, career positions, or the military.

Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, S141A060038

The Kansas State University (KSU) HEP enrolls 75 eligible students annually in a tailored, statewide Spanish and English distance adult learning program preparing commuting migrant participants to complete their GED and continue to postsecondary education training, career advancement, or enter the military. The project partners with the Collaborative Intercultural Multilingual Advocacy Center at KSU, other community agencies, and agribusinesses to further address the English acquisition and adult literacy needs of HEP participants. The expected outcome of the KSU HEP is that 75 percent of enrolled students will obtain a GED each year.

Madison Area Technical College, Madison, WI, S141A060008

The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) HEP provides necessary academic and support services to 100 eligible commuter participants annually to enable them to successfully obtain a GED and subsequently gain employment or be placed in an institution of higher education or other postsecondary training. The anticipated outcomes of the MATC HEP are that 65 percent of eligible participants will receive a GED and at least 65 percent will be placed either in postsecondary education, military service, or career positions. Mendocino-Lake Community College District, Ukiah, CA, S141A060027

The Mendocino College HEP provides quality academic and support services to 90 eligible commuter participants during the first year (then increasing by five each year over the five-year period) both on campus and at two satellite locations. At least 75 percent of the participants will attain the GED.

Somerset Community College, Somerset, KY, S141A060037

The Somerset Community College HEP will annually provide 110 eligible commuter participants with a comprehensive program of academic instruction and support services leading to attainment of the GED. The program will provide not only academic instruction but also opportunities to attend cultural events and other educational activities, including assisting participants in gaining entrance to and financial aid for attendance at postsecondary institutions. The expected outcomes of the project are to have a minimum of 70 percent of participants attain a GED annually and a minimum of 80 percent of HEP graduates will be placed either in postsecondary education, military service, or career positions.

Texas A&M International University, Laredo, TX, S141A060018

The Texas A&M International University HEP proposes to provide necessary academic and support services to 100 eligible commuter participants annually to enable them to successfully obtain a GED and subsequently gain employment or be placed in an institution of higher education or other postsecondary training. Students will receive individualized, self-paced instruction designed to address the specific needs of each participant. The expected outcomes of the TAMIU-HEP are to serve 100 students each year, of which at least 80 percent will attain a GED and at least 60 percent of HEP graduates will be placed in either postsecondary education, military service, or career positions.

Wake Technical Community College, Raleigh, NC, S141A060030

The Wake Technical Community College HEP provide a comprehensive program of academic and support services to 120 commuter students annually. The project has as a primary performance target that 80 percent of eligible program participants will obtain a GED and 90 percent of those who get their GED will be placed either in postsecondary education, military service, or career positions.
