VA Investigators Earn Patient Education Award

VA health services researchers who developed a patient education pamphlet for prostate cancer screening received the H. Winter Griffith Award for Excellence in Patient Education Materials by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.
The pamphlet, titled "The PSA test for prostate cancer: Is it Right for ME was created by members of the PROstate CAncer Screening Education (PROCASE) study team. PROCASE leaders Melissa Partin, PhD, and Nancy Dillon, RN, PhD, of the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, accepted the award on behalf of the PROCASE study team.
PROCASE is part of the VA study "Facilitating Shared Decision Making About Prostate Cancer Screening." The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different approaches to informing patients about the potential risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening on patient knowledge and decision-making participation. The results suggest that both a video and the pamphlet increase patient knowledge, enhance patient participation in decision-making, and alter screening and treatment preferences, but do not significantly impact screening behavior.
