EXHIBITS

The Life and Times of Gerald R. Ford
Opened September 2, 2008
ANN ARBOR -- A new permanent lobby exhibit presenting the timeline of Gerald Ford’s life story, featuring over 100 seldom-seen documents and photos from Library collections. Complements the Betty Ford Biography permanent exhibit that opened in April 2008 celebrating her 90th birthday.

Economy in Crisis, 1974 - 1975
February 17, 2009 to Winter 2010
ANN ARBOR -- Economic crises on an international scale are not new, and President Ford inherited a tough one in 1974. A new exhibit at the Ford Library in Ann Arbor shows how he attacked a witch's brew of inflation, recession, budget deficits, and oil supply worries.

This exhibit features rarely seen artifacts and archival materials from the Ford Library and Museum collections.

dolls A Child in the White House - Caroline Kennedy’s Dolls
June 19 - August 31, 2009

GRAND RAPIDS -- More than 70 dolls and puppets from 30 countries were given to young Caroline Kennedy, beginning in 1961 when her family entered the White House through 1963 when tragedy ended their brief residency.  Foreign dignitaries and first ladies – including Italy's Prime Minister Amintore Fanfani, the Ivory Coast's President Houphouet-Boigny, India's Indira Gandhi, Monaco's Princess Grace, and France's Madame de Gaulle – presented dolls to the First Daughter as state gifts. Other dolls in the collection were gifts from foreign citizens. On loan from the John F. Kennedy Library.

Musings
June 19 - August 31, 2009

GRAND RAPIDS -- The word musing is based on the noun muse, meaning the goddess of art in Greek mythology, one of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. The Muses inspire and preside over the creative arts. On display beginning June 19, 2009 at the Gerald R. Ford Museum is a collection of art quilts created by members of the Studio Art Quilts Association or "SAQA." Included are 29 art quilts from across the United States.

The SAQA is a non profit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt through education , exhibitions, professional development and documentation. The organization was founded in 1989 by a group of fifty artists and now has over two thousand members.

Sandra Sider, a contemporary quilt artist, critic and independent curator was the sole juror for Musings. In the past, Ms. Sider was the sole juror for numerous other SAQA quilt shows. She teaches art history and is a regular contributor to Fiberarts Magazine and other trade journals.


Picturing the Century: One Hundred Years of Photography from the National Archives
September 12, 2009 through January 9, 2010
GRAND RAPIDS -- The exhibition commemorates the end of the 20th century with a selection of photographs from the vast and varied holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). NARA photographs vividly capture the sweeping changes of the last one hundred years. They depict both the mundane and high political drama, society's failings as well as its triumphs, war's ugliness as well as its bravery.


ArtPrize
September 23 through October 10, 2009
GRAND RAPIDS -- The Museum will serve as a venue for artists displaying work in ArtPrize. ArtPrize is a radically open competition. Open to any artist in the world who can find space. Open to anybody in the city who wants to create a venue. Open to a vote from anyone who attends. Information at www.artprize.org

Rushmore Live: A Constitution Day Celebration
Thursday, September 17, 7:00 PM 
East Grand Rapids High School, East Grand Rapids, MI.


Join George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln for a Constitution Day celebration. The four former presidents will meet on stage at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Bill Barker, Colonial Williamsburg's Thomas Jefferson, has portrayed the 3rd president for more than twenty years. An actor and student of history, Mr. Barker played Jefferson in the musical "1776," and he has performed at the White House, the Palace of Versailles throughout the United States, Great Britain, France, and on the Las Vegas Strip. Mr. Barker has portrayed Jefferson in programs on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CNN, the History Channel, and C-SPAN.

Jim Foote, Sagamore Hill's Theodore Roosevelt, has portrayed the 26th president for more than 30 years. Mr. Foote has played TR at the White House, at Mount Rushmore, and all across the U.S. He has appeared on the History Channel, C-SPAN, and on Comedy Central's "Colbert Report," where he refused to apologize for the Spanish-American War.

Jim Getty, Gettyburg's Abraham Lincoln, has portrayed the 16th president for more than 30 years. A nationally-renowned actor and Lincoln historian, Mr. Getty has performed at the National Theater in Washington, D.C., the Library of Congress, and the Reagan and Ford Presidential Libraries.

Dean Malissa, Philadelphia's George Washington, has portrayed the 1st president for 10 years. Mr. Malissa has played Washington at Mount Vernon, Smithsonian Institution, National Constitution Center, Mount Rushmore, and across the U.S. He has appeared on Discovery Channel and Showtime.

This event is co-hosted by the Hauenstein Center for Presidential Studies at Grand Valley State University, the Gerald R. Ford Foundation, and the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library & Museum.

Michael Kaiser

GRAND RAPIDS -- Michael Kaiser has been the President of the John F. Kennedy Center since 2001.  Mr. Kaiser is known for his ability to work with failing art institutions - to not only make them profitable, but to expand the organizations.  Prior to entering the arts management field, he was a management consultant in the corporate sector.  The most recent awards presented to Mr. Kaiser were the George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music in America and the Kahlil Gibran "Spirit of Humanity" Award from the Arab American Institute Foundation.  This lecture is being held in conjunction with ArtPrize.  Visit ArtPrize.org for more information.


President Obama: The First Year

GRAND RAPIDS -- Chief White House Correspondent for U.S. News & World Report and winner of the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency in 2008 Kenneth T. Walsh will speak at the Ford Museum on President Obama and his first year in the Oval Office.  Mr. Walsh has been with U.S. News & World Report since 1984 as a congressional correspondent and has covered the presidencies of Ronald Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.  He is also the author of numerous books on the presidents and politics. Currently, Mr. Walsh serves as an adjunct professor of communication at American University in Washington D. Annual Outdoor Tree Lighting Ceremony

GRAND RAPIDS -- Join in the fun as the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum lights up the Grand with its annual holiday display of trees and holiday lights.  Also lighted will be the Children's Tree located inside the burial site of President Ford.  This towering blue spruce was given to President and Mrs. Ford for their 45th wedding anniversary.  A sing-a-long, refreshments and free admission to the Museum following the event will be included.

GRAND RAPIDS -- Once again the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum will open its doors from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. inviting one and all to celebrate the holiday season.  This year will include a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus - along with a few of his reindeer!  Holiday music will be provided throughout the afternoon by local choirs.  For additional information call the Museum at (616) 254-0400.

ANN ARBOR -- Application deadline. The Gerald R. Ford Foundation awards several research travel grants of up to $2,000 each in support of research in the holdings of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library. A grant defrays travel, living, and photocopy expenses of a research trip to the Ford Library. More information.

Gerald R. Ford Scholar Award in Honor of Robert M. Teeter

ANN ARBOR -- Application deadline. A grant of $5000 is awarded annually to support dissertation research on any aspect of the United States political process during the latter part of the 20th century. More information.
