WELCOME TO THE TRANSCANADA NORTH BAJA SYSTEM

The North Baja Pipeline System, acquired in 2004 by TransCanada Corp., is committed to operating a safe and reliable pipeline and to providing excellent customer service.

The North Baja System system is part of Gas Transmission Northwest Corporation, which was also acquired by TransCanada and now operates as the TransCanada GTN System. Together with Tuscarora Gas Transmission, owned by TC Pipelines LP, the systems comprise TransCanada’s U.S. Pipelines West.

The North Baja System is the 80-mile U.S. portion of an overall 220-mile pipeline initially designed to serve electric-generation load in the Mexican state of Baja California. North Baja Pipeline consists of 30- and 36-inch-diameter pipeline, predominantly in La Paz County, Arizona, and in Riverside and Imperial counties, California. It also includes a compressor station near Ehrenberg, Arizona, and various meter sets and valve stations.

With a recently completed Expansion, the pipeline will continue to serve electric generators but is now poised to be a significant path for entry of LNG-sourced natural gas into markets in southern California and Arizona from Sempra Energy International’s Energia Costa Azul LNG terminal off the coast of Baja California.

WHAT’S NEW

North Baja Completes Phase I Expansion

North Baja Pipeline was conceived as an east-to-west natural gas transmission system that would export U.S.-sourced natural gas into Mexico via the Gasoducto Bajanorte Pipeline, owned by Sempra Energy International.

The North Baja/Gasoducto Bajanorte pipeline is now prepared for a new role as the first point of importation of LNG-sourced natural gas on the U.S. West Coast, providing a path for this new source of energy to serve southern California and Arizona markets.

Phase I of North Baja’s Expansion consists of infrastructure changes that allow natural gas to flow in both directions on the system. Additional new pipeline and a meter station were included to allow North Baja to deliver LNG-sourced gas directly into Southern California Gas Company (an affiliate of Sempra) as well as into El Paso Natural Gas Company, previously North Baja’s upsteam supplier.

The Expansion allows for import into the United States of up to 600 million cubic feet a day (MMcf/d) of regasified liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplied from the Energia Costa Azul terminal in Baja California, Mexico.
“This project represents the first major point of entry for regasified LNG on the West Coast of North America,” said Henry Morse Jr., North Baja’s General Manager. “Our expansion brings a significant amount of supply security and diversity to the California/Arizona marketplace.”

North Baja’s Expansion certificate allows additional construction in the event that one or more additional LNG terminal facilities are built off the Baja Coast of Mexico.

Also, North Baja has also filed an application with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to build a lateral to serve the Yucca Power Plant owned by Arizona Public Service. Three miles of the proposed lateral will be in the U.S. and owned by North Baja. Another four miles will be in Mexico and will be owned by Gasoducto Bajanorte.
