Trends in Homicide Rates, United States, 1991 to 2005

From 1991 to 2005, homicide rates were consistently higher among persons ages 10 to 24 years than among all ages combined. Homicide rates among persons ages 10 to 24 years dropped from 15.6 deaths per 100,000 population in 1991 to 9.0 deaths per 100,000 in 2005.

Homicide rates were consistently higher for Non-Hispanic Blacks than for all other race/ethnicity groups from 1991 to 2005. Homicide rates for for Non-Hispanic Blacks declined from 62.6 per 100,000 population in 1991 to 32.8 per 100,000 in 2005.

In 2005, among persons ages 10 to 24 years, the homicide rate for males was 15.2 deaths per 100,000 population and the homicide rate for females was 2.6 deaths per 100,000. For males ages 10 to 24 years, the homicide rate was highest for those ages 20 to 24 years with 27.2 deaths per 100,000. For females ages 10 to 24 years, the homcide rate was highest for those ages 20 to 24 years, with 4.3 deaths per 100,000.

In 2005, among males ages 10 to 24 years, the homicide rate was highest for Non-Hispanic Blacks with 58.3 deaths per 100,000 population. Among females ages 10 to 24 years, the homicide rate also was highest for Non-Hispanic Blacks with 6.6 deaths per 100,000. For comparison, the homicide for Non-Hispanic White males was 3.3 per 100,000 and the homicide rate for Non-Hispanic White females was 1.5 per 100,000.

From 2003 to 2005, firearms were the leading mechanism for homicide among males age 10 to 24 years. The firearm homicide rate, among males ages 10 to 24 years, was highest for Non-Hispanic Blacks with 51.4 deaths per 100,000 population. The firearm homicide rate, among males ages 10 to 24 years, was lowest for Non-Hispanic Whites with 2.4 deaths per 100,000.

From 2003 to 2005, firearms were the leading mechanism for homicide among females age 10 to 24 years. The fireram homicide rate, among females ages 10 to 24 years, was highest for Non-Hispanic Blacks with 4.4 deaths per 100,000 population. The firearm homicide rate, among females ages 10 to 24 years, was lowest for Non-Hispanic Whites with 0.7 deaths per 100,000.
