Taxonomic_Procedures:
For samples collected from 1989 to 1994, each sample was split in the laboratory, using a Folsom plankton splitter, to a fraction that permitted processing (usually from ½ to 1/64 of the entire sample). The smallest split portion was poured into a settling chamber and allowed to settle for 24 hr. Organisms were counted and identified using an inverted microscope at 100X magnification. Remaining portion of each sample was archived. For samples collected from 1995 to 1999, samples were diluted to acceptable concentrations using a Folsom Plankton Splitter. One collecting tray was designated as the counting (c) tray, and the other was designated as the picked (P) tray. Each sample was placed in the splitter, the splitter was rocked five times to mix the sample, and the sample was poured into the trays. The splitter was rinsed with distilled water and this water was poured into the trays. Contents of the C tray were poured back into the splitter, and the procedure was repeated until a suitable density of zooplankton was obtained for counting. Samples from trays C and P then were filtered through 0.25 mircrometer nitex cloth to reduce sample volume. These samples were rinsed into 25 ml liquid scintillation vials and preserved with sugar neutral formalin. The P tray vial was used for identification of zooplankton, and archived. The C tray vial was rinsed into 50 ml settling chamber (Hydro-bios Kiel) and allowed to settle undisturbed for 24 hours. Zooplankton in this sample were counted at a magnification of 40x using an inverted microscope. These counts were used to estimate the number of organisms per liter of lake water. Species abundance calculations for all samples (1989-1999) were performed using the formula: N = (nd )/V. Where N = number of organisms per liter, n = number of organisms counted, d = dilution factor of sample (splits), V = volume of lake water sampled (liters). Here, V = vet opening area (m) x length of tow (m) x filtration factor.

Methodology_Description:
Zooplankton samples were collected between June and September, when lakes were accessible. All samples were collected ruing the day at various depth intervals over each lake’s deepest point. Samples were collected by lowering a ring-type zooplankton net (20 cm diameter and 64 micrometer mesh size) to within 1 m of a lake’s bottom, for shallow lakes, or to a depth of 10 m in deeper lakes. Nets were then retrieved to the lake surface at a constant rate. Three replicate tows were taken for each lake on each sampling date, except that only 1 vertical tow was taken for lakes sampled in 1989. All samples collected from 1989 to 1996 were preserved in 5% buffered sugar formalin. Seventy percent ethanol was used to preserve samples collected from 1997 through 1999.
