Description:
Abstract:
Data represents densities of larval long-toed salamanders (Ambystoma macrodactylum) and densities of various sized larval northwestern salamanders (Ambystoma gracile) observed while employing snorkel techniques along different distances from lake shores at different times of day. Densities are expressed as number of larvae per 100 meters of shoreline.
Purpose:
Data was collected as part of a mountain lake study to evaluate impacts of stocked trout on native biota.

Methodology_Description:
Ambystoma macrodactylum Larval salamanders were censused by snorkel surveys. Snorkel surveys were conducted during mid-afternoon (Day) and one half-hour after sunset (Night). Three transects were snorkeled during Day surveys and two were snorkeled during Night surveys. During Day Search surveys, a snorkeler would carefully search through substrate material within 2 m of shoreline and record the number of larvae observed. During Day and Night 2 m surveys, a snorkeler counted larvae within an area extending from shoreline to 2 m offshore. During Day and Night 5 m surveys, a snorkeler counted larvae approximately 1.5 m to each side of his/her longitudinal axis while snorkeling parallel to shore at a distance of 5 m from shore. Night surveys were assisted with the a handheld dive light.

Ambystoma gracile Larval salamanders were censused by snorkel surveys. During Day Search surveys, the number of larvae closely associated with, and often obscured by, substrate materials (i.e., "hidden") was recorded. Eggmass counts were counted and pooled from all Day surveys. Total lengths of observed larvae were visually estimated during snorkel surveys with the aid of a handheld ruler. Small larvae were determined to have total lengths < 90 mm. Large larvae were considered to have total lengths ³ 90 mm.
