The U.S. Agency for International Development
is committed to helping developing countries prevent the spread
of HIV/AIDS. Investing in research to develop new tools and
technologies [PDF, 1.3MB] for HIV prevention is a critical part of this
effort. USAID collaborates with governmental and non-governmental
partners to develop and evaluate safe and effective prevention
technologies such as microbicides and vaccines, and to study
emerging issues in HIV prevention such as the relationship
between male circumcision and HIV transmission.
- Microbicides
Ongoing biomedical and behavioral
research to develop and test technologies for preventing
HIV transmission is a hallmark of USAID's HIV/AIDS program.
- Vaccines
Prevention is a primary strategy
in the fight against the worldwide HIV pandemic, and a
safe and effective HIV vaccine would provide the ultimate
tool to prevent HIV infection.

The relationship between male circumcision
and risk of HIV transmission is an emerging issue of interest
in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

acceptability studies of male circumcision (MC), recently
begun MC clinical trials, and recent field assessments

Health research is integral to USAID’s ability to achieve its health and development objectives worldwide. In 2006, USAID outlined its five-year health research strategy. With this report, USAID provides an update on this strategy for using research funds to stimulate the development and introduction of key products through 2010.
