Hypoxia, or reduced oxygen is a recurrent problem in the Gulf of Mexico resulting in a "dead zone" for fish. Increased nutrients from runoff and agricultural practices are partly responsible for this phenomena. Wetlands can absorb and utilize these nutrients for plant growth. Stations sampled from the Mississippi River through the marsh show significant decreases in nitrogen from the Caernarvon Freshwater diversion. Source: LSU and USACE
