On August 6, 2009, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Judge Sonia Sotomayor to be an Associated Justice of the Supreme Court by a vote of 68 to 31.  As chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) presided over Sotomayor's confirmation hearings.  After the vote, Leahy applauded this historic confirmation and said it is one of his votes for a Supreme Court Justice for which he is most proud. On July 29, 2009, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) met with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and 12 other senators, including Sen.
