Research
Group 3: Wildlife Diseases
With their projects, the research group investigates (1) the development,
occurrence and pathogenesis of important diseases and (2) the influence
of diseases on the dynamics of free-ranging or captive wild animal
populations (see below: subjects and projects).
Often diseases evolve as an ecological factor which regulates
the dynamics of wild animal populations. As the anthropogenic impact
on wild animals is continuously increasing one of the major aims
are investigations focussing (1) on mutual transmission of infectious
agents between wild and domestic animals as well as (2) the potential
reservoir role of wild animals for infectious agents harming domestic
animals or men.
The research group combines five different scientific fields
(see below) which allow to study complex interdisciplinary projects,
as i.e. investigations in diseases of unknown etiology. Moreover,
the research
group counts as a centre of competence regarding wild animal diseases
and has a longstanding tradition in zoo animal pathology.
Furthermore, the research group organises the biannual "international
symposium on diseases of zoo and wild animals" and in irregular
time periods the " workshop of wild animal veterinary medicince
in the Wildpark Eekholt" as well as the "European wildlife
and zoo animal pathology workshop".
