Travelers' Information Stations Search

Governmental entities, as well as park districts and authorities, may be eligible to operate a TIS radio station for the purpose of disseminating information to travelers. A license is required before construction of or operation of a Travelers' Information Station may commence. This service, which was created in 1977 by the Report and Order in Docket 20509 (FCC 77-414, 67 FCC 2d 917) (scanned document), is covered under rule 47 CFR 90.242. Travelers' Information Stations operate in the AM Broadcast Band (530 kHz - 1700 kHz) and are limited to a 10 watt transmitter output power and the antenna height may not exceed 15 meters (49.2 feet). These stations may not transmit commercial information. This service is not available to individuals or groups, but only to governmental entities and park districts. See 47 CFR 90.242 and 47 CFR 90.20(a).

Application for an AM Travelers' Information Station license must be made on FCC Form 601. For additional information on AM Travelers' Information Stations, please contact the FCC's National Call Center at 1 - (888) - 225 - 5322 [ 1 - 888 - CALL - FCC ] or send an e-mail to WTBINFO@fcc.gov. This service is administered by the Commission's Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau. Questions and requests for information about AM-band TIS stations must be referred to PSHSB; the Audio Division cannot assist you on this subject.

The search form below uses the General Menu Reports, specifically a modified form of the Site/Frequency search. The service code for TIS stations is PW (Conventional Public Safety Pool). Database information for AM band TIS stations is maintained by PSHSB and is updated as needed.

Travelers' Information Stations may now be authorized for noncommercial operation in the FM broadcast band. For more information on applying for FM Low Power FM stations using FCC Form 318, please see the Low Power FM Broadcast Station information. The LPFM service is administered by the Audio Division, Media Bureau.

Searches for TIS stations may be performed using the General Menu Reports:

TIS via General Menu Reports, Site / Frequency Query, with a Service of LP and a Radio Service of PW.
