Introduction
On behalf of the National Library of Medicine, we would like to introduce
you to the proceedings of The Third Visible Human Project Conference.
The Conference, held at the National Institutes of Health's Natcher Conference
Center on October 5-6, 2000, consisted of presentations of 32 scientific papers, by Visible
Human Project Dataset license holders; a panel
discussion of anatomy in the new century, by five well known anatomist; and a keynote address,
by Alexander Tsiaras, President and CEO of Anatomical Travelogue, Inc. Participants
ranged from early adopters, current and potential
users and developers, and interested parties, from a wide variety of
disciplines, all interested in results obtained and problems
encountered using the Visible Human Project image datasets.. Our objective was
to foster scholarly discussions among project participants and to encourage
new collaborations among conference attendees.
In order to better capture the presentations given at the Conference,
each presenter was asked to provide up to 20 megabytes of multimedia information in web
accessible format,
that would be representative of their presentation. The information
could include text, pictures, movies and programs in any combination. The concept was to go
beyond
the limitations of the printed page. All materials submitted had to be based
on commonly used World Wide Web file formats. The information was collected
and edited for the CD-ROM by Mr. Richard A. Banvard of the National Library of Medicine.
The format is based on that developed in collaboration with Prof. Francesco Pinciroli and Mr.
Pietro
Cerveri of the Politecnico de Milano, Italy, for the Second Visible Human Project Conference
Proceedings.
Once again we offer our thanks to Prof. Pinciroli and
Mr. Cerveri for their creative thoughts and expertise.
We sincerely hope you enjoy your virtual visit with us.
