There are approximately 22,056 species that have been recorded from the Hawaiian Islands and surrounding waters. Many of these plants and animals (around 8,850) are found nowhere else on Earth. Hawaii has one of the highest rates of endemism in the world and is considered a biodiversity hotspot. Species checklists are a tool to quickly identify and explore organisms that reside in a particular geographic area (region, state, island, county or managed area).
