The Still Family
Commemorates "one of South New Jersey's most
deeply rooted African-American families"
(Courier-Post newspaper). The Still story includes
anecdotes about their ancestors' heroic efforts to buy their
family's freedom in the 1850's South and about the family
reunions that have endured through the decades. William Still,
famous black agent of the Underground Railroad in
Philadelphia, wrote the classic book,
The Underground
Railroad, which recounts the heroism of the fugitive
slaves and of men and women, black and white, North and South,
who, risking lives, fortunes, and personal liberty, helped
those fugitive slaves to flee from bondage. The Still family
historical committee maintains a rich archive, and much of it
is included with the project.
