A number of laboratory metrology seminars are offered by the NIST Weights and Measures Laboratory Metrology Group. Course description, the current schedule, and a sign-up form to be returned by e-mail, mail, or facsimile are provided here. The duration of all courses (unless otherwise noted) is one week, with the exception of the Basic Mass, Length, and Volume seminar for states, which is two weeks. The courses are: Basic Mass, Length, Volume - for State legal metrologists; Basic Mass - for Industry; Intermediate Mass, Length, Volume; Advanced Mass (new material is presented each time the course is offered); Advanced Hands-on Class (Advanced Mass is a prerequisite). Location All courses will meet at NIST at the following location unless otherwise indicated on your confirmation notice: National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Building 101, Room B 11 Gaithersburg, MD 20899 Cost There is no charge for State participation in any of the laboratory metrology seminars coordinated by the Weights and Measures Division (WMD). The WMD program is funded to provide support to the States (only) to ensure uniformity in legal metrology throughout the United States. The charge for industry or foreign government participation in 2009 is $1495 per one-week course to cover the cost of seminar materials and additional staff. This fee does not cover the cost for hotel, transportation, lunches, or breaks. Do not send checks, purchase orders, or other payments until you receive confirmation for attendance. When you receive a confirmation notice (6 to 8 weeks prior to the seminar), instructions will be provided regarding payments. Do NOT send payment (in any form) prior to receiving a confirmation letter with a specific request for payment. The Weights and Measures Division is required to recover costs for these seminars and does not have supplemental funding available for sponsoring seminar attendance. Sign-up and Confirmation The sign-up form must be returned by facsimile, mail, or as an e-mail attachment. Telephone requests will not be accepted. Once we have received your application, we will notify you if the class is full, and a confirmation notice will be sent to you approximately six to eight weeks before the seminar with detailed information about the schedule and location of the seminar. Transportation The Washington Metrorail (light rail system) is available from National Airport (awkward with much luggage). You must purchase a ticket at the National Airport Metro station for the entire trip. Take the Blue Line from the airport, change to the Red Line at Metro Center station and take the Red Line to the last stop at Shady Grove, then take a cab to the hotel. Taxis are also available at a cost between $40 and $50. You may also rent a car if you so desire. Many of the local hotels have a shuttle to and from NIST. Please verify if your hotel has shuttle service to NIST when making room reservations. New Training Laboratory Safety Requirement Safety toed shoes are now required for working with artifacts weighing more than 500 g due to changes in the NIST Weights and Measures Laboratory Metrology Training Laboratory Safety Policy. Seminar attendees are required to provide safety toed footwear complying with at least the I/C-75 rating of ANSI Z41.1.
