Vehicle Infrastructure IntegrationVehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) is about wirelessly connecting vehicles with each other and roadside equipment in order to enable a host of safety, mobility and commercial applications. The premise is that vehicles will one day be equipped with onboard units that can communicate with units along the roadside and at intersections, as well as with other vehicles to provide such features as crash avoidance and advanced transportation management. VII offers the opportunity to know much more about traffic and roadway conditions than ever before. Vehicles equipped with VII technology will be able to anonymously send information that includes travel time and environmental conditions. It may one day be possible to know traffic conditions along every major street in urban areas as well as along every interstate highway across the nation. This information will lead to improved traffic signal control, ubiquitous traveler information, better transportation plans, and reduced cost for existing transportation data collection methods, among other benefits. There are also probably many more applications that have yet to be thought of. For more information, please visit the VII web page at http://www.vehicle-infrastructure.org, or contact James Pol at James.Pol@dot.gov. |
