Nearly 21 million Americans suffer from diabetes, and an additional 1.5 million cases are diagnosed each year in people 20 and older. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, but it's also a disease that in many cases can be prevented or at least managed if diagnosed and treated early. Untreated diabetes can result in blindness, kidney failure, and amputations of the lower limbs. Studies have shown that minority populations are more likely than whites to be diagnosed with diabetes and to suffer more complications and higher rates of death.
This report features a conversation with AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy about preventing and managing diabetes, especially in minority populations.
