NIH/Fogarty Clinical Research Training Scholars and Fellows Program

Purpose
The Fogarty International Center in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), and the National Institute of Child Health and Child Development (NICHD) is offering a one-year clinical research training experience for graduate level U.S. students in the health professions. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in developing countries. If you are accepted for a scholarship, then Africa, Asia and the Americas are regions of the world that you may find yourself experiencing.
This program is designed primarily for students meeting all these qualifications:
A strong potential for a career in international health activities and/or clinical research
Advanced standing in a U.S. medical or osteopathic school; or enrollment in a doctoral level program at a U.S. school of public health, nursing, dentistry or other school in the health sciences where global health research may be a career goal. Applicants must have strong academic records and must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents. Medical and osteopathic students must have completed their basic science courses and one year of clinical clerkship; public health and other doctoral students must have completed their master's degree coursework prior to beginning the fellowship
- Support of their home academic institution, including a committed mentor who will continue to work with the student after return to the home institution

Post-doctoral Level Program: visit the Web site of the Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars & Fellows Support Center at Vanderbilt University.
Duration and Terms: Each scholarship will be for one year. The term will begin with an intensive orientation and training program on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland in July of each year. This will be followed by at least 10 months of intense research training at the foreign site.
In addition, post-doctoral researchers in active programs including medical residencies and fellowships are also eligible for research training awards.
The support of this program is now through the R24 grant which is through Vanderbilt University with Sten Vermund as the principle investigator (Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholars Support Center @ Vanderbilt-AAMC (R24TW007988)).
