Flexible spending accounts
The Defense Department lets its civilian workers have pre-tax savings accounts to pay for health and child care costs, like many in the private sector. But while the department is authorized to offer such accounts to service members and their families, it does not, partly because it claims many enlisted members would not understand how to use them. If you are an enlisted member or married to one, would you be comfortable using a pre-tax spending account for health or child care if it were made available?
