Office on DisabilityThe Health and Human Services Office on Disability (OD) oversees the implementation and coordination of disability programs, policies and special initiatives in HHS pertaining to the health and health-related programs for over 54 million persons with disabilities in the United States. The Director of the Office reports to the Secretary and serves as an advisor on HHS activities related to disabilities. OD is (a) the key advocate for persons with disabilities in HHS; (b) the coordinator of special efforts on behalf of disability policy and programs across HHS agencies; and (c) the administrator of several special programs in support of improved health and wellness services for people with disabilities. It has played a significant role in breaking down barriers between and among HHS agencies so that their cooperation and coordination on projects related to improved health and wellness for persons with disabilities are successful. In addition, it has endeavored to reach out to all groups and constituents who wish to have input into the health system by regular meetings with constituent groups and advocates and through its Website.
