The Dean of the F. Edward H�bert School of Medicine
Oversees degree programs for medical and graduate students that meet the standards of accrediting bodies and the needs of the uniformed services;
Manages the School with the purpose of furthering the School's academic goals, the needs of the uniformed services, and the welfare of the students, faculty, and staff;
Leads the School's faculty;
Maintains an environment that insures and promotes the academic and personal welfare for the School's students, faculty, and staff.
The Dean of the F. Edward H�bert School of Medicine reports to the President of the University. The following report to the Dean of the F. Edward H�bert School of Medicine:
The Chairs of the Academic Departments, the Office of Educational Affairs, the Offices of the Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, the Associate Dean for Graduate Education, the Associate Dean for Medical Education, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Executive Affairs, and the Commandant School of Medicine.
The Office of Educational Affairs
Consists of the Associate Deans for Medical Education and Faculty Affairs.
- Oversees medical curriculum review and development
- Coordinates and provides guidance for faculty development programs
- Promotes educational research
The Associate Dean for Medical Education
- Coordinates the academic year schedule and the four-year academic calendar
- Advises medical students in matters related to their medical education
- Designs methods for, gathers, compiles, and archives students' assessment of instruction
- Serves as a liaison between the USUHS School of Medicine and accrediting and other external professional organizations
- Oversees the medical school curriculum and serves as a resource for information regarding the curriculum and maintains an historical record of curriculum policy and actions and materials related to academic accreditation

The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs
The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs serves as a faculty advocate and works to promote an academic enviroment that supports, enhances, and rewards the activities of the SOM faculty. The Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is charged To provide consultation and assistance on Faculty Affairs to the Dean of the School of Medicine in the following areas:
- Development and implementation of policies relating to faculty recruitment, appointment, retention, development, promotion, and tenure to accomplish the mission of the SOM
- Responsibility for assisting the Dean SOM in the establishment of manpower and personnel requirements, to include the proper mix between civilian and military positions.
- Provide leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of a School of Medicine faculty compensation program.
- Responsible for assisting the Dean in the development and implementation of the civilian faculty salaries in the School of Medicine to insure that they are in accordance with the provisions of the enabling legislation.
- Provide leadership and guidance in the development and implementation of an annual faculty review process that is based on accepted techniques of quality assessment.
- Provide leadership and guidance in the development of a SOM policy on faculty teaching including establishing mechanisms to evaluate and reward teaching activities and outcomes.
- Responsible for assisting the Dean in the development of a long range SOM strategic plan for academic programs addressing faculty development, staffing, budget, and space requirements.
- Serve as a liaison to the Faculty Senate on matters of Faculty Affairs
The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education
- Serves as Administrative Director, National Capital Consortium
- Advises the Dean of the School of Medicine, the President of the University, and others on military-unique medical curricula
The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs
The Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs assists the Dean, School of Medicine (SOM), USUHS, in the overall management and administration of the School of Medicine. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Establishes and maintains educational, research, and clinical relationships with all clinical sites, including Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the National Naval Medical Center, Malcolm Grow Air Force Medical Center, and all other federal treatment facilities with which USUHS-SOM has affiliation agreements for medical student teaching. Represents the SOM in fulfilling the requirements under the affiliation agreements with SOM clinical affiliates for medical student educational programs.
- Provides oversight for all international academic programs offered or undertaken through the School of Medicine or the Graduate School of Nursing, and coordinates OASD (HA) approval if/as appropriate. Proposes, develops, and with the approval of the President, USUHS, establishes cooperative university agreements (memoranda of agreement or understanding) with international military medical institutions, in accordance with DoD directions and guidance.
- Represents USUHS-SOM in national medical organizations (ACGME, AMA, AMSUS).
- Assists in the development of Medical School curricula to include military specific subjects and assures that academic standards are met to include programs to meet military medical readiness requirements. Teaches seminars, supervises residents, treats patients and generally carries out teaching and clinical duties commensurate with his faculty rank and clinical credentials.
The Associate Dean for Graduate Education
- Reviews applicants for the graduate program and refers qualified candidates to the individual departments
- Monitors graduate students' progress and counsels individual students
- Certifies applicants for degrees
- Maintains accreditation of graduate degree programs
- Recruits applicants for the following graduate degree programs of the University: Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science in the biomedical sciences, Doctor of Public Health, Master of Public Health, and Master of Tropical M

The Associate Dean for Student Affairs
- Supervises the Office for Student Affairs and the admissions and academic records
- Supervises the quality of life, to include personal counseling, for all students in the School of Medicine
- Serves as the Chairperson, Committee on Admissions, and ex-officio member of the Student Promotions Committee and the Curriculum Committee
- Supervises the integrated medical education program for all students in the School of Medicine and provides professional career guidance
- Manages the graduate medical education application process
- Serves as the faculty advisor for student government
The Assistant Dean for Clinical Sciences
- Serves as the principal deputy to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs
- Assists in the individual planning of senior student educational program development and balance
- Provides personal counsel for professional development and career guidance for all medical students in the School of Medicine, in conjunction with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs
- Supervises boundary issues between the School of Medicine educational program and requirements of the uniformed services for graduate medical education
- Serves as the School of Medicine's primary liaison with graduate medical education program directors
- Serves on the Committee on Admissions, the Curriculum Committee, and the Student Promotions Committee as an ex-officio member
- Supervises the day-to-day management of clinical clerkship programs for third-year medical students to include student and faculty consultation, program review, individual student clerkship evaluation review, and networking communication throughout all sites where clinical education takes place
