Kristen Knapper manages IT acquisitions and organizes a busy household

Kristen Knapper Senior Project Manager FAS Federal Systems Integration and Management Center Crystal City VA Flexibility in my job is key and my bosses are good at rewarding hard work.
  • - Kristen Knapper likes to say she works for one of the most organized offices in the government – where no one ever sits at their desk!  She’s a FAS senior project manager for large IT acquisitions in Crystal, City, Virginia. Kristen explains that she and her colleagues are constantly in touch with customers and that takes them out of the office as often as they are in it.

  • - Helping customers work through IT acquisition challenges keeps Kristen busy, sometimes after hours. But for her, there are many rewards to managing and supporting people. She loves her job and the people she works with calling them “the best at GSA.”

Kristen Knapper gets ready for a wild ride on a recent vacation.
  • - As a senior project manager, Kristen gets calls from customers at all hours helping them solve whatever problems come up. She says solving problems challenges one’s thinking skills. But when she goes home, acquisition challenges get left behind for creativity when she breaks out her stamping and scrapbooking hobby tools.

  • - Kristen got started stamping while she was on maternity leave six years ago and says it gives her an outlet that lets her design, create and socialize with friends at scrapbooking parties. She’s even started a small business to help others who want to learn.  But that hobby is just one of her passions. As the mother of a six-year-old, she’s always on the run. From scouts to sports, her young son keeps her busy. And then there’s the Penn State Nittany Lions football team. When she can, Kristen heads up to State College, Pennsylvania to watch her college alma mater play.

  • - Between all the demands of work and home, Kristen describes organization as essential in her life. Her bosses at GSA help with that. They understand the demands of supporting IT acquisitions and contract management, allowing staff members the flexibility they need to get the job done 24/7 and generously rewarding hard work. Kristen started working for GSA in 2000 and has worked in FAS for two years.
