Department of Energy Awards $10 Million in

 Stimulus Funds to Guam

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 26, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the U.S. Department of Energy has awarded the Government of Guam $9.6 million in formula grants as a result of the enactment of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  Through the recovery package, Guam is eligible for more than $140,000,000 in financial assistance in addition to $60,000,000 in tax credits to be covered in full by the U.S. Treasury.  The funds awarded today by the U.S. Department of Energy are a part of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program and will assist the Government of Guam in implementing strategies to reduce fossil fuel emissions, reduce total energy use, and improve energy efficiency in our community.  The U.S. Department of Energy has already awarded the Government of Guam $19 million in ARRA funds for its State Energy Program. In total and to date, the Government of Guam has received over $42.8 million in ARRA funds.

“Energy efficiency and energy conservation are a central part of the recovery package, and the President’s agenda,” said Congresswoman Bordallo. “The $10 million in federal funds awarded today to GovGuam give us an opportunity to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and to lower our power bills. These funds will help us use technology to save energy and improve energy efficiency.”
