Congresswoman Bordallo Addresses IGIA

Calls on Federal Agencies to Coordinate with the Territories on Implementation of Recovery Package

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 24, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

During the 2009 Plenary Session of the President’s Interagency Group on Insular Areas (IGIA), Congresswoman Bordallo today called on representatives from the federal agencies administering grant programs to coordinate with territorial governments during the implementation of President Obama’s recently signed recovery package.  Congressman Bordallo emphasized that interagency coordination was necessary to ensure that the full purposes of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are realized.

Today’s IGIA meeting was chaired by newly-confirmed Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, and was attended by Governor Felix P. Camacho, Governor Benigno Fitial of the CNMI, Governor John deJongh of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Governor Togiola Tulafono of American Samoa.  Congressman Gregorio Sablan of the CNMI, Congresswoman Donna Christensen of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Congressman Eni Faleomavaega of American Samoa also joined Congresswoman Bordallo as territorial representatives to the U.S. Congress.

“Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar emphasized a collaborative approach for the IGIA,” Congresswoman Bordallo said today. “It is important for the federal agencies to work with territorial governments in the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The formula grants, tax credits and competitive grants in the recovery package are opportunities to create and save jobs on Guam.”
