Summary findings
During the 2004-05 school year, BJS surveyed campus law enforcement agencies serving 4-year universities and colleges with 2,500 or more students.
- More than 9 in 10 public institutions used sworn police officers, compared to less than half of the private institutions.
- Most sworn campus police officers were armed, and overall about two-thirds of the campuses had armed officers.
- Among campuses with 5,000 or more students, private institutions had more law enforcement employees per capita than public institutions.
- Campus police agencies were more likely than local police agencies to assess officer recruits’ community relations skills related to problem-solving, understanding of cultural diversity, and conflict management prior to hiring.
- Nearly 9 in 10 students were enrolled on a campus where campus law enforcement personnel provided general crime prevention and rape prevention programs.
