CDC Issues New Guidance for Businesses to Plan for H1N1 Flu Season

(Santa Fe) – Health Secretary Alfredo Vigil, MD said today that the New Mexico Department of Health expects to begin receiving H1N1 flu vaccine as early as mid-October to protect New Mexicans against the disease. State Announces First West Nile Virus Fatality of 2009
Department of Health Confirms Two New Cases

(Santa Fe) The New Mexico Department of Health announced today that a 45-year-old man from Doña Ana County died from West Nile Virus infection. The man had encephalitis, the more severe clinical form of the disease, and had been hospitalized since Aug. 1. In addition, a 39-year-old woman from Rio Arriba County tested positive for West Nile fever and is recovering. She became sick Aug. 1 and was not hospitalized. (Read More) (Spanish Version)

Department of Health Prepares for Changes to WIC Food Packages
Nutrition Classes Will Teach People About Upcoming Changes

(Las Cruces) – In October the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) food packages will change to better reflect individual preferences and help families maintain a healthy and balanced diet. To prepare people for the changes, New Mexico Department of Health WIC offices across the state will hold special education sessions in August and September. (Read More) (Spanish Version)

Heroin Remains Serious Concern in New Mexico
Prescription Drug Deaths Steady in 2008

(Santa Fe) – Health Secretary Alfredo Vigil, MD, said the most recent drug overdose data shows that the heroin problem continues to be a serious concern in New Mexico. The New Mexico Department of Health analyzed the last decade of drug overdoses due to heroin and found that the rates have fluctuated but remained relatively steady. There was a rise in heroin-related overdoses in 2008, similar to the rate in 1998. (Read More) (Spanish Version)
