Sign up to receive NVAA updates and application information for the March 1–6, 2009, NVAA Academy to be held in the Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas, area. The National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA) offers 3-track training in victims' rights and services to satisfy the entry-level, specialized, and leadership training needs of victim serving professionals.

25 Years of Rebuilding Lives: Celebrating the Victims of Crime Act is the theme for next year’s National Crime Victims' Rights Week, April 26–May 2, 2009. To find or promote the NCVRW events planned in your community, use OVC’s Calendar of Events, an online calendar with more than 100 upcoming events in the crime victim services field. Join your colleagues who have already discovered this essential online tool for locating, planning, and promoting victim assistance-related events nationwide.

On October 22, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, in commemoration of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, OVC is sponsoring a Web Forum Guest Host Session on Implementing and Operating Address Confidentiality Programs. Join Melissa Deinlein, Manager of the Washington Address Confidentiality Program, and Victoria Sostack, Director of Victim Services at the Pennsylvania Office of the Victim Advocate, for the session.

OVC announces the release of the Promising Practices for Serving Crime Victims With Disabilities bulletin and companion toolkit, developed under an OVC grant by SafePlace to help organizations seeking to improve their response to crime victims with disabilities.

On September 24, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, OVC will sponsor an OVC Web Forum Guest Host Session on responding to sexual violence on campus with S. Daniel Carter, Senior Vice President of Securities on Campus, Inc., and Margaret Mikkelsen, Executive Director of Students Active for Ending Rape (SAFER).

OVC and NIJ cosponsored an online discussion on assisting child victims of commercial sexual exploitation on September 10. OVC Director Gillis copresented the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) Crime Victim Services Award during the NSA's 2008 annual conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. The East Baton Rouge (Louisiana) Sheriff's Office received the award for “outstanding achievement by a Sheriff's Office in support of victims.”

On September 10, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, OVC and NIJ will cosponsor an OVC Web Forum Guest Host Session on assisting child victims of commercial sexual exploitation with Rachel Lloyd, Executive Director of Girls Educational and Mentoring Services, and Jay Albanese, Ph.D., author of “Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children: What Do We Know and What Do We Do About It?”

August 2008

On August 28, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, in recognition of and preparation for the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims on September 25th, OVC is hosting an OVC Web Forum Guest Host Session on delivering victim-sensitive death notifications. Join Janice Harris Lord and Bill Jenkins for the live discussion.

OVC is pleased to announce the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week theme for 2009: 25 Years of Rebuilding Lives: Celebrating the Victims of Crime Act, to be observed April 26–May 2, 2009. The theme colors have also been selected. For more details, visit the home for National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

Sexual assault victims and advocacy programs affected by disasters such as the recent flooding in the Midwest are encouraged to apply for assistance under the National Sexual Violence Resource Center's Relief Fund for Sexual Assault Victims.

In observance of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, OVC offered an online discussion on best practices for assisting victims of domestic abuse in later life hosted by Bonnie Brandl, M.S.W., Director of the National Clearinghouse on Abuse in Later Life, and Jane Raymond, M.S., Advocacy and Protection Systems Developer, Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services. FTC cautions consumers about tax and rebate scams. Unsolicited emails and telephone calls promising advance payments or verifying personal information are scams. Visit OnGuardOnline.gov to learn how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft, phishing scams, and fraud.

OVC invites you to visit VictimLaw, the free database of more than 15,000 victims’ rights legal provisions, which has helped more than 7,000 visitors since its debut in April 2007. Visit VictimLaw to see how easy it is to locate victims’ rights laws without a law library or state code.

Budget Detail Worksheet Standard Forms Awards of $50,000 to $500,000 are available through the FY 2008 National Field-Generated Training, Technical Assistance, and Demonstration Projects grant to provide services and support to crime victims or to ensure that victims are afforded the rights to which they are due. Applications are due May 29, 2008.

On May 27, 2008, at 2 p.m. ET, in recognition of National Missing Children’s Day, OVC will offer a Web Forum Guest Host Session on Assisting Family Members of Missing Children hosted by Duane Bowers, LPC, training consultant for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and Abby Potash, Program Manager of Team HOPE (Help Offering Parents Empowerment).

National Crime Victims' Rights Week was held April 13–19, 2008, following the National Observance and Candlelight Ceremony on April 1 and the Attorney General's Crime Victims' Service Awards Ceremony on April 11. The Attorney General honored victim survivors and advocates during the events and delivered remarks in appreciation of their efforts. The OVC Director also spoke at the event; read the Director's remarks at the Awards Ceremony.

OVC announces the 2008 NCVRW Award Recipients. Join us in congratulating this year's recipients, who were honored at the awards ceremony on April 11, 2008.

    National Victim Assistance Academy logoBuilding a Career in Crime Victim Services (August 2008)

    Visit OVC’s Training Center to download the latest training materials, including the Foundation-Level Training curriculum from the 2008 National Victim Assistance Academy (NVAA), track 1, which lays the groundwork for building a career in the victim services field.

    Included in this curriculum package is a resource manual covering six victimization topics: child abuse, domestic violence, drunk driving, elder abuse, homicide, and sexual assault.

    The materials for the instructor and participant are available in multiple formats and are free to download.

    Serving Unique Needs: Crime Victims in Indian Country (July 2008)

    Save the Date: December 11–13, 2008, when the 11th National Indian Nations Conference: Justice for Victims of Crime will be held in Palm Springs, California. Held every 2 years, the conference brings together tribal service providers, Native American crime victims, victim advocates, and community members. Highlights include:

    • Successful victim programs and strategies.
    • Current information and promising practices.
    • Challenging workshops and plenary sessions.
    • Preconference institutes.

    The “Strengthening the Heartbeat of all our Relations” themed conference is coordinated by the Tribal Law and Policy Institute under a grant from OVC. If you have questions regarding this event, please contact conference@tlpi.org

    Implementing SANE Programs in Rural Communities: The West Virginia Regional Mobile SANE ProjectNew Release from OVC (June 2008)

    Through funding from OVC, the West Virginia Foundation for Rape Information and Services (FRIS) has worked to meet the needs of rural victims by effectively implementing a mobile SANE program. FRIS has developed this replication guide, Implementing SANE Programs in Rural Communities: The West Virginia Regional Mobile SANE Project (NCJ 221749), to assist rural communities working to better meet the needs of victims.

    The guide addresses common problems faced by rural areas working to develop and maintain SANE programs, including:

    • feasibility,
    • sustainability,
    • recruitment,
    • training,
    • implementation.

    World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2008World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 2008)

    In observance of the 3rd annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15, 2008) and the need to address the issue of elder abuse, OVC will hold a Web Forum to discuss neglect, maltreatment and mistreatment in later life. Visit the Web Forum on June 18, 2008, 2 p.m. e.t. to participate in the discussion.

    OVC also offers relevant publications and links to related organizations to assist victims of elder abuse, service providers, and allied professionals. If you suspect elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, call your state's elder abuse hotline or reporting number. You can learn more about this issue and download prevention and awareness materials by visiting the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse Web site.
