Shalala today announced the award of $20.7 million in grants for AIDS prevention and assistance programs for children and their families. The awards go to a wide variety of organizations and state and local agencies, from Catholic Charities in Fort Worth, Texas, and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx to the Great Lakes Hemophilia Foundation and the Larking Street Youth Center in San Francisco. The awards are being made under Title IV of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency Act, and are administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration, an agency of the Public Health Service in HHS. Secretary Shalala said, "Programs that prevent kids from becoming HIV-positive -- or help HIV-positive kids and their families to cope -- deserve community and individual support. It's also appropriate that the federal government support these programs under the Ryan White CARE Act -- legislation named for a youth who died of AIDS." Assistant Secretary for Health Philip R. Lee, M.D., who directs the Public Health Service, said, "Working with children and youth and their families, the 48 recipients of these awards are developing new partnerships with their communities to better serve HIV infected children and their families." Since 1988, the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau has administered the Pediatric/Family AIDS Demonstration Program, which has supported model projects that provide comprehensive, family-centered and community-based medical services to children, youth, women and families with, or at risk for, HIV and AIDS. In FY 1994, Congress transferred this funding to Title IV of the Ryan White CARE Act, where it will be permanently housed. Under Title IV, the program is now called the HIV Program for Children, Youth and Families, which HRSA's Maternal and Child Health Bureau will continue to administer. ### (See attached list) Competing Planning and Initial Development Grants Maricopa County Department of Public Health $ 75,000 Phoenix, Ariz.
