Shalala issued the following statement upon learning of the death of Rep. William Natcher (D-KY): "Mr. Natcher was a towering figure whose place in history would have been secure even in the absence of his remarkable longevity. His mastery of the legislative process was unsurpassed, his graciousness legendary, and his integrity an inspiration. "Mr. Natcher was one of the great patrons of biomedical research who leaves a healthier citizenry as his legacy. "His contribution to the National Institutes of Health cannot be overstated. "Mr. Natcher said that the 1992 groundbreaking ceremony for the William Natcher extramural research building, which coincided with his 83rd birthday, was one of the happiest days of his life. He would visit our Bethesda, Md., campus every Saturday to check on the building's progress. "The Natcher building will house the NIH's extramural research programs, its grant-making offices, and several of its institutes. I have arranged for a Navy band to play `My Old Kentucky Home' when the building is dedicated this fall." ###
