Shalala has announced the appointment of Patricia A. Ford-Roegner of Atlanta, Ga., an experienced nurse, social worker and public affairs specialist, as regional director for Region IV of the Department of Health and Human Services. Ford-Roegner, 46, is Secretary Shalala's representative in coordinating the administration and implementation of departmental policies throughout the eight-state region, including intergovernmental affairs at the state, county and municipal levels. She serves as a liaison with the public, interest groups, governors, mayors and other local officials with whom HHS deals. Region IV, with headquarters in Atlanta, serves the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Since March 1993 until taking her current position, Ford- Roegner had operated her own consulting firm, PFR Public Affairs, in Atlanta. Between late 1990 and the time she formed her own firm, she worked for the Service Employees International Union in Washington, D.C., as director of the Nurse Council and Health Issues Division. She and her family returned to Atlanta in 1992. Ford-Roegner received her associate degree in nursing in 1967 from Gwynedd Mercy College, Ambler, Pa.; bachelor's degree in public policy from West Chester State University in 1969; and a master's in social work from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. From 1965 to 1982, she was in nursing and ended her active practice as head nurse at the American Oncologic Hospital for Cancer Research in Philadelphia. During that period she also taught medical/surgical nursing at the Delaware School of Nursing in Wilmington, ran community-based programs in Philadelphia and Atlanta and directed a Georgia work release center for women offenders. From December 1981 to November 1990, she was the government affairs' political director for the American Nurses Association in Washington. She traveled extensively in the Southeastern states. During 1977 and 1981, she was associate executive director of the Coalition of American Public Employees. Ford-Roegner's awards and honors include: the ANA Management Award in 1988, 1989 and 1990; Coty's Extraordinary Woman Award in 1987; New York University School of Nursing's 1989 Legislative and Policy Award; and a citation from the National Association of Female Executives. Her husband, Russell H. Roegner, Ph.D., works for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her daughter Amber is in eighth grade and attends a local school, Pace Academy.
