RICHARD KLAUSNER LEAVES NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE;
SECRETARY THOMPSON NAMES ALAN RABSON ACTING NCI DIRECTOR

Richard D. Klausner, M.D., officially stepped down as the director of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) on Friday, Sept. 28. Klausner was recently named president of the newly created Case Institute of Health, Science and Technology, which will be located in Washington, D.C.

"It is with deep regret that I watch Rick leave the helm of the NCI," said HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson. "I wish him continued success in his new position, and I look forward to working with him in the future."

Secretary Thompson today also named Alan S. Rabson, M.D., as the acting NCI director. Rabson, NCI's deputy director, will serve in this capacity until a new director is named during the coming months.

Rabson came to the National Institutes of Health in 1955, as a resident in pathologic anatomy. In 1975, he was named director of NCI's Division of Cancer Biology, Diagnosis, and Centers, where he served until his appointment as the institute's deputy director in 1995. Rabson holds clinical professorships in pathology at Georgetown University Medical Center and The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Md. In 1987, Rabson became a member of the Institute of Medicine.
