Secretary Salazar to Release Major Study of
America's Bird Populations

Tomorrow Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar will join representatives from bird research and conservation organizations on Thursday, March 19, at 2:30 p.m. EDT to release the first ever comprehensive report on bird populations in the United States. The press conference will be held at the National Press Club.

The report, The U.S. State of Birds, was developed by a partnership among the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, state government wildlife agencies and non-governmental organizations. It documents the decline of bird populations in many habitats due to habitat loss, invasive species and other factors over the past four decades. At the same time, it provides heartening examples of how sustained habitat conservation and other environmental efforts can reverse the decline of many bird species.
