For the fourth straight year, Japan has triggered a safeguard duty on pork imports. According to Government of Japanese statistics for April and June 2004, total pork imports rose to 316,755 tons. The safeguard tariff increases the gate price for pork from $4.81/kg to $5.99/kg.
